February 4, 2016 Legislative Update

Dear Neighbors,

A lot has been going on at the Capitol and in our district. We're nearly a month away from the start of the legislative session and we're starting to unofficially hear bills. Here are a few things I wanted to update you on.

Eagan Forward Meeting
I recently attended the Eagan Forward Launch Party and I am enthusiastic about this project to shape Eagan's future. You can find more information about Eagan Forward by visiting their website.

Letter on Delta Sent to D.C.
The recent column entitled "Nonstop MSP to Tokyo is at risk, and so, then, is Minnesota Business" and Star Tribune Editorial highlighted the importance of nonstop flights from MSP to Tokyo. I joined nearly a dozen of my colleagues in signing a letter to Sec. John Kerry and Sec. Anthony Fox on the importance of this direct route. We also asked that the Japanese abide by the Open Skies agreement and not purposefully disadvantage American businesses in favor of Japanese ones.

Minnesota #1 in Job Creation
Evidence of an improving Minnesota economy continues as Gallup ranked our state the first in the nation for job creation in their 2015 Job Creation Index. The report is based on workers' reports of hiring activity at their place of employment. Minnesota topped the list with an index of 38, two points ahead of Georgia and Utah, each with 36. The national average was 30.

In the survey, 46% of workers said their employer was hiring workers; higher than the average of 42%. With an unemployment rate of just 3.5% and 40,000 new jobs in the last year, we are on the path to long-term growth.

Open Appointments
Positions on state boards, councils and committees shape the direction of virtually every important issue in Minnesota. Each month the Secretary of State releases a list of new open appointments and vacant positions. This month there are new open appointments related to health care and rehabilitation. You can find out more here at the Secretary of State's website.

This is an amazing opportunity for you to influence how state and local government will run. It's people like you, who have experience in so many areas, who are able to make government better through your participation. Please consider sharing your unique skills with your fellow Minnesotans.

Appointed to Subcommittee on Licensing
I was recently appointed to a new subcommittee on licensing. They will be holding their first meeting next Monday, February 8th. We will unofficially hear three bills which will address music therapy, genetic counselors, and nurses. You can find out more at the subcommittee's website.

As always, feel free to contact me with any thoughts or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin
